The 27 Skills You Need In Order To Pass Your Driving Test

The DVSA has an ongoing campaign called “Ready to Pass” which outlines a comprehensive approach to learning to drive, and our ADIs are following and emphasizing the development of 27 core skills essential for safe driving. These skills are categorized into eight groups, covering everything from the basics of vehicle operation to advanced navigation and driving under different conditions. Here’s a breakdown of the competencies and skills aspiring drivers need to master:

  1. Basics (Skills 1 to 4): This category includes understanding legal responsibilities, conducting safety checks, cockpit drills, and ensuring vehicle security.
  2. Control and Positioning (Skills 5 to 7): Learners must familiarize themselves with the vehicle’s controls and instruments, master moving off and stopping, and maintain safe positioning on the road.
  3. Observations, Signalling, and Planning (Skills 8 to 13): These skills focus on the effective use of mirrors, giving signals, anticipating and planning for potential hazards, managing speed appropriately, dealing with other traffic, and adopting fuel-efficient driving habits.
  4. Junctions, Roundabouts, and Crossings (Skills 14 to 16): This group covers the approach and navigation through different junctions, roundabouts, and pedestrian crossings.
  5. Manoeuvres (Skills 17 to 20): Includes performing various maneuvers such as reversing, turning the car around, parking safely, and executing emergency stops.
  6. Road Types (Skills 21 to 23): Drivers are taught how to navigate through country roads, dual carriageways, and motorways.
  7. Driving Conditions (Skills 24 to 26): This encompasses driving in the dark, adapting to different weather conditions, and managing driving with passengers and loads.
  8. Following Routes (Skill 27): The final skill involves independent driving, following directions from a sat nav, and interpreting a series of traffic signs.

These competencies are designed to prepare learners for a lifetime of safe driving, emphasizing the importance of understanding and practicing each skill thoroughly. The DVSA encourages learning with an approved driving instructor (ADI) and supplementing formal lessons with practice sessions with family or friends, as a combination of professional instruction and practice can significantly improve a learner’s chances of passing the driving test (Ready to Pass?) (GOV.UK).
